Wood Bats vs Metal Bats

One of the biggest complaints I hear about watching college baseball is that metal bats have ruined the game. I disagree with this but when you watch a game played with wood it is usually lower scoring then a metal bat game. Is it more exciting to go to a 8-7 game or a 1-0 bunting game? I personally rather watch the players hit the ball hard all over the field instead of watching a guy get on with a walk and get bunted to second waiting for that groundball to get through the hole. The issues between Wood and Metal bats injuries could have been solved for about $50,000 according to an article by Jeff Passan which can be read here.

A train passing just beyond Olsen Field’s outfield fence tooted the first few strains of the “Aggie War Hymn” in the middle of a Le Moyne defensive play early on Friday night.
While the crowd roared its approval, the Dolphins finished off the play, undaunted by Texas A&M’s apparent home-track advantage in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.
Dealing with hard-throwing Aggies left-hander David Newmann was another matter, however. Top-seeded A&M defeated fourth-seeded Le Moyne 7-2 before 5,267 fans in Olsen Field, after Newmann allowed a lone run over seven innings while striking out nine.
“He doesn’t fool around out there,” said Le Moyne shortstop Andy Parrino, who’s hitting .412. “He comes right at you and makes you put the ball in play.”
The Aggies and ace Kyle Nicholson will face Louisiana-Lafayette, which defeated Ohio State 5-4 earlier Friday, at 7 tonight in the winners bracket. Le Moyne will play the Buckeyes at 1 p.m. today in an elimination game.

DALLAS - The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released the Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week awards for the period ending May 23, today. Florida State freshman infielder Jason Stidham was named National Hitter of the Week, while Southern Miss senior RHP Ryan Belanger was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I conferences each week and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Stidham put together a spectacular three-game series as the freshman third baseman hit .571 (8-for-14) in leading Florida State to its first three-game series sweep of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. The Palm Bay, Fla., native registered multiple hits in all three games as he posted his second four-hit game of his career in game one. He collected a home run and three doubles en route to posting a 1.000 slugging percentage and an on-base percentage of .588. Stidham led the team in hits (8), doubles (3), RBI’s (10), total bases (14) and batting average on the week. He opened the series, with four hits including a home run and a double as he registered his first four-RBI game of his collegiate career. He hit what would be the eventual game-winner in the top of the third as he hit a two-out, 2-RBI single. On Friday, he had two doubles and two RBI’s as well as a stolen base.
In the series finale, Stidham tied his career-high in RBI’s with four, matched just two days prior. In a nine-run third, Stidham made two plate appearances and was the only Seminole to collect two hits in the inning. He hit a two-run single in his first at-bat and then an RBI infield single in his second at-bat. He hit a sacrifice fly RBI in the ninth to cap off his 10 RBI performance.
Belanger pitched the first complete-game of his two-year Southern Miss career and limited Houston to four hits, one walk and struck out eight batters to lead Southern Miss to a 6-0 victory over the Cougars in game one of the series at Cougar Field on Thursday night.
Belanger finished with 120 pitches, gave up one walk in the first inning, two hits in the third inning, one in the fourth inning and one in the eighth inning. Only one runner advanced to second base in the game and he retired the side in six of the nine innings. His eight strikeouts matched his season high that he collected against Kent State on March 16.

After setting the tone for a three game sweep at Houston with a brilliant performance on Thursday night, Southern Miss senior righthander Ryan Belanger has been named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week for the period of May 14-19. Hitter of the Week honors went to Rice sophomore outfielder/designated hitter Aaron Luna, who had an outstanding weekend at the plate as the Owls increased their winning streak to 18 games with a three-game sweep of Memphis and a non-conference win over Baylor.

Luna batted .500 (7-of-14) with three multiple hit games, drove in a team-high six runs and shared the team lead with five runs scored to help the Owls go 4-0 on the week. Luna slugged a double and a home run for a .786 slugging percentage. He also drew two walks for a .563 on-base average. In addition to a team-leading seven base hits, he also contributed a sacrifice bunt and was error-free in eight total defensive chances in the field. This is Luna’s second C-USA Hitter of the Week honor this year.

He raised his arm and took his time starting around the bases, two things he never does.
“And I’ll never do it again,” Kyle Russell said.
But this home run meant something.
Russell, the Longhorns’ right fielder, drilled a ball far over the left-field fence and pumped his fist because he knew.
Russell had just set Texas’ single-season record for home runs with his 21st, a long rainbow that fell well outside of Reckling Park.
Russell was the lone bright spot Tuesday, when Texas’ 10-game winning streak over Rice came to an end in a 7-4 loss in front of 5,003 fans.
“It’s a great honor and a great relief for this to happen,” said Russell, who typically just puts his head down and trots around the bases. “This is the second-best place for this to happen. The best being Austin.”
Russell, who began his career as a Longhorn by hitting a homer against Rice, grew up in Magnolia, a suburb of Houston.
Behind 1-2 in the count in the sixth inning, he went with an outside pitch from Rice starter Chris Kelley.
“He just tried to put it in play, and that’s what he has been doing,” Texas coach Augie Garrido said. “He’s been playing for the team, not the record. That’s probably why he was able to get it.”
His team-first attitude explained why Russell was upset that he raised his arm after his home run, which came with his team trailing 4-2.
“I guess my emotions got the better of me,” said Russell, who was on the team bus after the loss, not even realizing the media would want to talk to him about his record-setting homer.
It took Russell just 42 games to accomplish the feat.
Rice, meanwhile, beat Texas for the first time since 2003, when the Owls topped the Longhorns 5-4 in Omaha, Neb., en route to the national championship.
Every time the Longhorns scored Tuesday, the Owls (30-11) responded.
“That’s why they won the game, they did a better job of responding,” Garrido said. “And they kept our offensive game in check with good defense and excellent pitching.”
Texas (31-11) managed to push across the tying run in the fourth inning, when Russell walked, Bradley Suttle singled and Russell Moldenhauer sacrificed them to second and third. Russell scored on Preston Clark’s grounder to short.
The Owls pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning to go up 2-1.
Russell homered in the sixth to make it 4-2, but Rice responded again, as Chad Lembeck hit a two-run double to give the Owls a four-run lead.
And after Texas came up with two runs in the seventh, cutting the lead to 6-4, Rice’s Joe Savery hit his third home run of the season.
Jordan Danks and Chance Wheeless, who hit first and second for Texas, were a combined 0 for 9 with six strikeouts, but that wasn’t the Longhorns’ only problem.
Texas used six pitchers, who combined to walk seven and hit another batter.
“What happened on the mound between the two teams was the difference in the game,” Garrido said. “It’s baseball. Things like that happen.”
So do home runs.
Especially off of Kyle Russell’s bat.

I have recently been slacking off on the site because I had to take the Massachusetts Teaching Exam today. I apologize to all the fans of the blog because I want to create the top college baseball resource in the country. I will have more time on my hands to cover the college baseball world in the upcoming months. We have seen tremendous growth over the last year with over 500 people visiting on certain days. The staff has made plans to attend between 25-30 baseball games this spring in the Northeast from Boston College to Franklin Pierce.

The Elon Baseball team has released their 2007 schedule. They open the season in the Springmaid Beach Resort Tournament hosted by Coastal Carolina where they will take on UVA, Coastal Carolina, and North Florida. They also have a trip to Miami to face the Hurricanes for a three game set before opening the season in the Southern Conference. They have big weekday home games against North Carolina, South Carolina, and Wake Forest to name a few. The full schedule is available here. The athletic department also has posted some news and notes in this press release which was released today.
